I was very happy to find this little bit of spring. 

If you ever find a dead Jerusalem cricket, you’ll notice that their heads look very much like human skulls.  (The Navajo name for them means “red skull.”)  But when they’re alive, they are weirdly cute.

In this cold, dry season, I was really happy to spot another Western Pygmy Blue.  It’s amazing that they’re still out and about after nighttime temperatures have dipped into the single digits

I’m pretty sure this butterfly is a Western Pygmy-Blue, the smallest butterfly in North America. 

I’ve seen a few of them before, but this one was the tiniest.  The wing is much smaller than my smallest fingernail.  You can get some sense of its size by looking at the grains of the sandstone it’s standing on.
