A couple of times in the last month, we’ve gone walking by Elbert Creek north of Durango. It’s been a dry season (until the last few days), so the creek is narrow enough to step across in most places, and quite shallow.
The first time we were there, I heard lots of splashing and thought the creek must be full of frogs. But when I finally caught sight of something, it was too long to be a frog. I thought of salamanders, but they didn’t move like salamanders. It took a while to realize that the creek is packed with little brook trout like this one.
